Spuds Get Opening Night Victory

The Moorhead Spuds girls basketball team started off the 22-23 campaign with a solid victory against the St. Cloud Crush 64-49. This is the third year in a row the Spuds have won on opening night, Coach TD was happy with the performance. “I thought the ladies fought hard tonight, without a scrimmage before the season I was a little nervous but they navigated the game flow really well.” The Spuds were led by seniors Anna Nelson (15 points), Grace Perry (13 points), and Haley Oberg (12 rebounds). “The captains played like the leaders of the team,” said Dryburgh, as he watched his Spuds force 29 Crush turnovers and converted 23 points off of those turnovers. The Spuds built a solid lead of 10 points at the half with some timely shots and pesky defense. Sophomore Annie Horan had 8 steals and 3 additional deflections to spearhead the Spud defense. With the win the Spuds turn their attention to themselves and getting better. “We are going to focus on what we can do to get better, we have some things we can adjust before we play Tuesday and just focus on getting better instead of thinking about who we are playing,” Coach TD added. The Spuds have two more road contests next week before opening their home slate vs Sartell-St. Stephen on December 13th.
